When the topic is mental health, everyone has got an opinion. These are basically crazy and technically unacceptable. Mostly, it is about mocking the illness overall. While it is difficult to just differentiate myths and facts in any given topic, it is apparently close to impossible to cut out the facts out of the group of statements about a medical term like mental illness. Let us now discuss the mental health myths and the reality you should know.
Children are not prone mental health problems
Mental health issues have nothing to do with the age of a human. This is one of the apparently illogical myths about mental illness, you might ever hear. Children show early signs of the illness and they need medical help. Considering the academic pressure and stress these youngsters go through nowadays, it is hard to not accept that the children can’t experience mental health issues.
Puberty, Mood swings and Medical Illness
Most people confuse mood swings with medical illness. Puberty gives the person mood swings. Mood swings can seem very normal and the apparent difference between mood swings and medical illness can be seen. Moreover, children of the same age are more prone to illness like depression and anxiety. Hence, it is vital to keenly note their behavior and analyze the issue. In addition, some parents believe that they need to be left alone with their friends or bring home someone of their age to help them through the silence. They think it is helpful. Still, we must know that children are more scared of opening up to people their age as they might make fun of it and discuss their personal issue with the rest of the students. They would rather prefer a matured person who can understand a teenage disturbance.
Violence And Unpredictable
This is another apparently insane myth a lot of people hold. People with mental illness are violent and they can do anything anytime. In fact, people who are affected by mental issues are more likely to be the victim of violence and bullying. They experience the discrimination and are pushed to the state of depression, which is again bad.
Mental illness could be even severe depression or simply a disturbed mind. Only those who are very much disturbed and undergoing serious treatment and medications are pushed to this category. Moreover, mocking them is a style. A rude one, though. Understand that if a human acts out of zone or is a little disturbed due to some emotional issues, all of it comes under the category and they need medical help. They must not be termed as anything. Understand them and help them with the medical help they require. Do not mock or do anything that could worsen their current condition.
