While their origins remain shrouded in ambiguity, numbers, as they are, have always held an everlasting allurement for the human race. The patterns of numbers, their repetitions and their association with events have attached an almost mystical status to the numbers so much that they have come to be seen as signs from the Gods themselves in many societies around the world. Despite the vast cultural and ideological differences, numerology, i.e. belief in the role of numbers in dictating certain events in life has captured a huge following across the world.
So how does numerology actually work and how do numerologists predict events looking at the numbers?
Numerology operates on the belief that our lives and the phenomena that we experience or witness are pre-destined or can be prophesied by looking at the numbers.
By numbers, it refers to the numerals which are assigned to us. According to numerology, all humans have a specific number and it is this number which determines the personality, health, career, emotions, preferences, thinking, relationships and other life events of a particular person. This number is calculated usually by means of the person’s date of birth.
There are three types of numbers in the Indian numerological system which is calculated by way of looking at the date of birth of a person. These are the psychic number, the destiny number, and the name number. The psychic number signify the person’s basic character and how a person views himself, the destiny number is related to one’s past life karmas and signify the world’s perception of the person while the name number determines the relationships that the person shares with other people. A key aspect of the system is the role of the nine planets in determining the events in a person’s life. With each planet being accorded a number, the movement of a particular planet exerts an influence in the life of the person whose number matches that of the planet’s number.
Misfortune or incompatibility?
According to numerology, if a person faces certain unpleasant incidences in life, it is most likely a result of the person’s number not being compatible with the material things or people that are involved in those incidences. For example, having a car or mobile number that is incompatible with that of the person’s number may bring unfortunate incidents for the person. Similarly in the case of relationships, when the numbers of two people are not harmonious with each other, there will most likely be friction in the relationship. Different planetary positions also bring about different conditions for a person such as bringing about an auspicious day to engage in something while also avoiding other things until the position of the planet change.
While there is certainly no hard scientific evidence as far as the validity of numerology is concerned, the fact that the practice has traversed through the many ages across all national borders and is prevalent in societies that are completely different from each other makes numerology a very interesting proposition even for the staunchest of critics.
