How has social media impacted romantic relationships?

Social media rules our lives. Whether it is our professional life or personal life or our romantic life we are heavily dependent on the various social media platforms. Now this social media is a double edged knife as far as your romantic relationships are concerned. Let us try to evaluate the pros and cons of social media in terms of our romantic liaisons are concerned.

Here are the advantages that one can enjoy:

One of the biggest advantages that you get when you are looking out for a suitable person to date is that you get a number of people from whom you can choose. You interact with a number of prospective dates online through chat. You can take the relationship one step further with the one with whom you can relate. Also, if you do suffer from heartbreak at times it is easier to overcome the depression as there are a number of more people out there in the virtual world who are waiting to talk to you.

Watch out for these disadvantages:

You may never know if the person with whom you interacting in a romantic way in the virtual world is genuine. Furthermore, if you are already in a committed relationship there are chances that your love interest is busy flirting with a number of other people in the social media. You may try to keep a tab on your date’s social media activities but there will be certain limitations. Also, there is a possibility that you unnecessarily doubt your partner. Your insecure nature and prying into your partner’s virtual life can also lead to a break-up.

Differentiating between the real and virtual world:

The main problem is that youngsters are so much involved in the virtual world that they fail to differentiate between what is real and what is not. The increasing cases of criminal activities where innocent youngsters have been duped by cheaters are on the rise. It is therefore important that youngsters use social media as a means to befriend a person, but he or she must take the relationship to the next level only after one is sure about the other person’s intentions.

One most common misconception is that more the number of lovey dovey pictures of you and your partner on social websites the more committed you both are. But in reality you are only trying to convince yourself that all is well in your so called heaven. According to some experts this shows that you are insecure in your relationship.

Social media has impacted our love lives. But we must know where to draw the line. It is high time we understand that a long list of friends and a picture of you with your partner in a romantic post does not assure that you have a perfect social and romantic life. It is important that youngsters try to come out of this virtual web and live in a more realistic world. Showcasing their love on their FB profile page is not enough. For your relationship to last you need to have love in your hearts.
