After Hair Transplant Care in Hair Restoration Surgery

With increasing levels of pollution, hard water, global climatic changes, and stress in everyday life, more and more cases of hair loss and baldness are being reported. Most people become victim to hair thinning or bald spots on the scalp in the prime of their youth. Thanks to the advancement of technology, these people don’t need to stay bald for the rest of their life. With surgical procedures, such as hair transplant treatment, you can restore your hair growth and say goodbye to feeling embarrassed or wearing hair wigs.

What exactly is hair transplant?

When a person suffers extreme hair loss, due to one or more of the reasons mentioned above, for a consistent period of time, they are likely to witness significant hair thinning or bald spots on the scalp in some cases. These bald areas can be effectively covered by undergoing a hair transplant, a small surgical procedure wherein hair follicles are transferred from the donor to the recipient, in order to regrow the desired number of hair on the latter’s scalp.

Types of hair transplant

There are two kinds of hair transplant procedures – FUE (Follicar Unit Extraction) and FUT (Follicar Unit Transaction). The FUE process removes the hair follicles and transplants them individually, while in FUT transplants, a strip of hair from the back of the head is removed and prepared for the transplant.

Things to consider before getting a hair transplant

Going for a hair transplant procedure is a big decision and there are some important things to know before you think of getting one.

  1. Hair transplant is not possible on a bald scalp. For the procedure to yield effective results, you need to have at least some hair on your scalp, to begin with. For instance, to take care of a receding hairline or hair thinning on top of the head, the hair transplant process takes hair from the back and sides of the scalp and transmits it to the thinning areas.
  1. Hair transplant is a permanent procedure. As such, you need to carefully weigh out all your options for hair restoration before choosing anyone. There is no going back on your decision and so you must make your choice of treatment wisely.
  1. Cost of hair transplants. It is undoubtedly an expensive procedure but the results in the long run definitely outweigh its cost. Considering that it’s a one-time investment for a permanent solution to all your hair problems, saving you from unnecessary expenditure on hair wigs and the like for several years.
  1. Choosing a good clinic is important. With so much competition among several hair clinics, all promising cost-effective best hair restoration treatments, it’s always better to do a thorough research on all the available options and choose a good and reliable clinic that can justify your money spent.

What happens during hair transplant treatment?

Like any other surgical procedure, some injury is bound to happen in the hair transplant treatment too. Therefore, your surgeon might advise you to take proper care of the treatment site on your scalp by following a few prescribed guidelines. These will help the treatment site to heal better and faster, and also facilitate hair restoration after the surgery.

How to care after hair transplant surgery?

You can continue with your daily activities, as usual, keeping in mind though a few precautions listed below which may help you get back on track faster.

  1. Keep your sleep posture upright. At least for the first night after the surgery, it’s important to sleep in the correct position to avoid pain. To make yourself more comfortable, you can use 3-4 pillows under your head.
  1. Wash your hair once the bandages have been removed. Your surgeon will usually take them off a day or two after the procedure. You can then choose to wash your hair.
  1. Take care of the stitches (if any). During some hair transplant treatments, you may need to undergo a few stitches. These can be easily removed after 7-10 days of the surgery. Make sure to regularly check if the stitches are healing properly. Your surgeon will properly instruct you on what to do if there are bruises or swelling of any kind. Consult your surgeon if the issue is serious.
  1. Only take prescribed medicines. If you experience throbbing pain or tightness of the scalp, you can take the medication prescribed by your surgeon. Never take any other medicines, such as blood thinners or aspirins, without consulting your doctor first. They are likely to delay healing.
  1. Avoid smoking and drinking. It is likely to interfere with the healing of the treatment site, making the process longer unnecessarily.
  1. Don’t over exert yourself. For at least three weeks after hair transplant, you should take particular care not to do any stressful work of any kind. It’s better to even avoid intercourse for at least 10 days.
  1. Make regular follow-up visits to your surgeon. It’s important to get routine checkups done after the hair transplant surgery. Your surgeon will check for improvement in hair growth, which might be visible after 4-5 months of the treatment.

With so much to take care of both before and after the treatment, hair transplant might seem like a tedious process at the outset, but rest assured, it’s all worth the effort at the end of it all. It can save you a lot of money that you might end up spending in the long run on fake hairpieces to cover those bald spots and avoid embarrassment. Moreover, hair transplants can really boost your self-confidence levels and make you feel good and happy about yourself. Now that’s something much more valuable than any amount of money or effort spent, isn’t it?
